May 12

The Ascension of the Lord Solemnity Holyday of Obligation Acts 1:1-11/Eph 1:17-23/Mt 28:16-20 (58) Pss Prop.

*Ascension of Christ – Jouvenet.

This artwork by Jean Baptiste Jouvenet shows Our Lord Jesus Christ ascending into heaven in majesty, surrounded by angels, as His Mother and disciples look after Him and stretch their hands up towards Him.

**The Ascension of Jesus (anglicized from the Vulgate Latinascensio Iesulit. ‘ascent of Jesus’) is the Christian teaching that Christ physically departed from Earth by rising to Heaven, in the presence of eleven of his apostles. According to the New Testament narrative, the Ascension occurred on the fortieth day counting from the resurrection. In the Christian tradition, reflected in the major Christian creeds and confessional statements, God exalted Jesus after his death, raising him from the dead and taking him to Heaven, where Jesus took his seat at the right hand of God. In Christian art, the ascending Jesus is often shown blessing an earthly group below him, signifying the entire Church. The Feast of the Ascension is celebrated on the 40th day of Easter, always a Thursday;  some Orthodox traditions have a different calendar up to a month later than in the Western tradition, and while the Anglican Communion continues to observe the feast, many Protestant churches have abandoned the observance.

And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs – heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.
